Effective 09/09/00

This policy describes the fair information practices that govern the collection, maintenance, use, and disclosure of personal information on the Electric Cooperative Bar Association (“ECBA”) web site provided by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (“NRECA” or “We”).

Collection Practices

Like most other web sites, NRECA maintains web logs that automatically record basic, non-personal information about visitors. This information consists of: IP address; type of browser and operating system used to access our web site, date and time of access, pages visited, and referring/exit pages. NRECA normally uses web log information only in aggregate form to enable us to make the ECBA web site more useful. We like to know which features are popular and how visitors locate the site. Web logs may be used to identify visitors who seek to damage the web site, use the web site in unauthorized ways, or interfere with operations. Information about users who try to engage in any unapproved activities may be shared with law enforcement agencies. We do not collect any personal information about a routine visitor unless the visitor provides it to us.

Email and Web Forms

If you use the ECBA web site to send us email, ask for information, respond to a survey, or provide personal information through the ECBA web site in any other way, NRECA collects and may maintain the information that you provide. Your information may be shared among NRECA staff and others as necessary in order to respond to your request. Routine email sent to ECBA through this web site or otherwise is not necessarily secure against interception. If your communication contains personal information that you consider sensitive, you may not want to use email.

Security and Data Quality

NRECA maintains its web site and its information with appropriate technical, administrative, and physical safeguards to protect against loss, unauthorized access, destruction, misuse, modification, and improper disclosure. We are committed to maintaining accurate, timely, relevant, and appropriate information about users. However, no computer system can ever be fully protected against every possible hazard. We provide reasonable and appropriate security to protect against foreseeable hazards.

On the Internet. a cookie is a piece of information that a web site transfers to a user's computer for record-keeping purposes. The ECBA web site does not currently use cookies.

Uses and Disclosures

NRECA uses the ECBA web site to provide services and information to its members, electric cooperatives, and members of the public. Personal information collected through the ECBA web site may be used from time to time by outside consultants or others hired by us to assist in carrying out ECBA activities. NRECA could be required to disclose personal information in response to valid legal process, such as a search warrant, subpoena, or court order. Any record keeper faces this possibility. Disclosures may also be appropriate to protect NRECA’s legal rights or during emergencies if physical safety is believed to be at risk. ECBA believes that these events are unlikely, but they are possible. The ECBA site has Listserv capability, including Listserv archive capability on this web site. NRECA does not sell, rent, or otherwise share the ECBA listserv or messages posted to it. NRECA also provides ECBA members with access to an online membership directory through the ECBA web site. NRECA does not sell, rent, or otherwise share this membership directory.
